The History of the Los Angeles Animal Services Department

In the following pages, you can read about various issues that emerge from the activities of the Los Angeles Department of Animal Services.  LAAS, like most similar agencies around the country, are poorly understood government agencies, primarily because the main citizens they serve are not human.  We present this material here as a first step towards understanding how the non-human citizens of our cities are policed, housed, cared for, treated by medical professionals, and sometimes put to death.
